Welcome to La Plata MD Real Estate and General Information La Plata is a town in Charles County, Maryland, United States. It has a population of 6,551 and is the county seat of Charles County. La Plata is in a great location with an easy commute to surrounding cities; Washington (approximately 30 miles), Baltimore (approximately 60 miles) and Annapolis (approximately 45 miles). La Plata is quickly growing and shifting from a housing community to more of a business center. Historic Mount Carmel located just outside of the town is special to La Plata. It is the oldest Catholic convent in all of the United Sates. Another one of the towns major features is the College of Southern Maryland.
EDUCATION The College of Southern Maryland is a higher education institute available to residents of La Plata. It is located on 8730 Mitchell Road. Other colleges and universities within a 27 mile diameter include Georgetown University (approximately 25 miles), Howard University (approximately 25 miles), George Washington University (approximately 26 miles) and Northern Virginia Community College (approximately 27 miles). Some of the larger public schools include La Plata High School (6035 Radio Station Rd), Milton M. Somers Middle School (200 Willow Lane) and Walter J. Mitchell Elementary (400 Willow Ln). A few of the Private schools include Archbishop Neale Elementary school (104 Port Tobacco Rd) and Grace Lutheran School (PO Box 446). RECREATION Silver Linden Park, Wills Memorial Park and Tilgman Park are a few great spots in La Plata for outdoor recreation. Shopping centers include the Potomac Square Shopping Center, La Plata Shopping Center and Hawthorne Shopping center. There is also a farmers market twice a week. For the sports enthusiasts the Capital Clubhouse (3033 Waldorf Market Place) offers year round athletics. A few of the sports offered include hockey, soccer, lacrosse, flag football, baseball, and basketball. Other activities include rock climbing and cheerleading. |
